Guide to Building Emotional Resilience in Personal and Professional Life

Resilience is the ability to adapt and bounce back whenever things don’t go as planned. When you have the power of resilience, you will never dwell or wallow over failure. Instead, you will have the go-getter attitude of learning from your mistakes and then you’ll move forward.

In life, you don’t get everything your way. Some of us get disappointed by little things. Take me for instance. I was searching for Internet providers in my area a few months back. I was so bummed to learn that no provider can yet offer 100 Mbps in our radius. I know it’s a little thing but it killed my joy! I am afraid life must have disappointed you as well.

Why Is Resilience Important?

Whether it’s your personal life or business, you can get through anything with resilience. That’s why it’s so critical to success. Psychologists say 3 elements are essential to developing resilience:

  • Challenge

Resilient individuals view difficult times as a challenge. Failures and mistakes are opportunities to grow. They never let that leave a negative reflection on their self-worth.

  • Commitment

Resilient people have a strong commitment to their goals. They are not just committed to their relationships but fiends, beliefs and the things they care about.

  • Personal control

Resilient individuals focus on the situations and events that are in their control. This helps them feel confident and empowered.

How to Build Emotional Resilience?

Now if you are struggling to build resilience, start with these:

1: Work On Self-Confidence

Confidence is the key to success no matter what aspect of life it is. Despite the setbacks, you must believe in your ability to facing the storm. As you develop a strong sense of self, you will keep moving forward and taking risks.

2: Develop Strong Relationships

Strive to develop strong connections with people whether it’s at work or personal life. The more real friendships you develop, the stronger the support network you will have.

3: Practice Mindfulness

Self-care and mindfulness are important. If you want to stay on top of the game, you must take good care of yourself. Exercise, rest, healthy eating, emotional balance, and hydration can greatly develop positive energy.

Mindfulness lets you be aware of yourself and your actions. This would save you from feeling overwhelmed by it all or whatever that may be going on around you.

4: Be Thoughtful in Handling Adversity

Who doesn’t want things to go well all the time? Unfortunately, sometimes, there are certain circumstances that make things go beyond our control. Always keep yourself prepared to participate in adverse situations. Be thoughtful and don’t make any decision in haste.

5: Be Flexible

It’s a famous phrase “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” Well, you can only make lemonade if you’re flexible. In fact, flexibility is a team sport. If you are able to develop this one quality, it will help you in relationships and at the workplace.

6: Set SMART Goals

By SMART I mean developing specific, measurable, achievable and timely goals. This a proven formula to achieve or accomplish anything. If you really want to succeed, you must first set smaller goals. Once you are able to tackle them, you can set bigger ones.

7: Have a Clear Sense of Purpose

After having a sense of purpose, you know why do are doing what you are doing and why are you making a particular decision.

Our gut can be really helpful here. It reveals our innate instinctual feelings. When they say trust your gut, it feels right doesn’t it? That’s because it is probably right.

8: Find Humor

You cannot survive without humor. It’s an important survival skill and also a leadership quality. However, having appropriate humor is an art. It makes people simple, foster friendships, and eases tensions.

9: Practice Consistency

Your success would also depend on finding habits, values, and attitudes that will keep you consistent. Only that way you will get positive results. Once you are consistent, you would develop routine and momentum. You will also develop a reputation for a consistent individual who doesn’t stop until they get what they want. You will become the person who keeps trying.

10: Develop Acceptance

If you want to overcome something, the first trait you need is acceptance. This is the hardest for some people. It takes a lot of courage to admit that things are not ok. Whenever something bad happens, we naturally try to fix it. However, sometimes, you cannot do anything. If the mirror is broken, you have to accept that it’s broken. It cannot be put back together.

I hope with these strategies, you are able to develop emotional resilience. Life will knock you down for sure but guess what, if you are persistent and put all the hard work in, you will succeed. So like I told you I was disappointed about not finding high-speed Internet in my area. A week later, my neighbor introduced me to Verizon Internet plans and I got what I needed. You will too! However big or small that may be!
